Oakmont’s Sheep Move to East Rec

Look Who’s in the East Rec Picnic Area

A herd of sheep, which began their grass-chomping in west Oakmont, are shown here at work around the East Rec Center pond and picnic area.

Photos by Oakmont resident Maurice Fliess June 28 show the herd of Droper sheep grazing around the picnic area above the East Rec pond. A second photo shows the sheep savoring tall green grass with the pond and aerating fountain in the background. A third, wider shot, shows the herd at work around the pond.

Temporary fences contain the sheep, which are guarded by a special breed of dog that will bark if people approach too close.

Oakmont is in its third year of using a herd from Living Systems Land Management LLC to provide environmentally friendly fire protection
