Due do an open trench and hazardous conditions during this phase of the ERC construction, the parking lot at the East Rec will be temporarily closed until approximately April 1, 2019. Please do not park in the parking lot or your vehicle may get trapped inside the gate until the following morning. Pickleball and tennis players will be able to use the access road on the East side of the building.

The East Recreational Center renovation project has had project updates on the OVA Website on a regular basis with pictures and descriptions of progress during construction. The current projection for the ribbon cutting ceremony, according to Iris Harrell (BCC) is scheduled for May 1, 2019.

OVA Submitted their Grant request for funds on December 18, 2019. The amount of funds requested is $1,920,000. OVA hired the Glen Price Group and Griffin Mapping that worked with our own Grant Team to prepare the grant submitted to CalFire. The grant funds, if awarded to OVA, will cover:

  1. Fire prevention efforts throughout Oakmont (removal and trimming of trees, junipers, ladder fuels, etc.)
  2. Community Outreach Program
  3. Hiring a Project Manager (PM) for all projects within Oakmont
  4. Paying for staff time working on the project
  5. Collaboration with Sonoma Ecology Center for future projects, including outside collaboration with different entities
  6. Planning for Phase II of Oakmont’s Fire Prevention Plan

CalFire will contact the grant recipients in April. If awarded, the funds will be available sometime in September, which will give OVA 4-5 months to submit the required paperwork that must be filed before funds are available.

The funds will be held in Trust with Sonoma Fire Safety (SFS), a Fire Safety Improvement Counsel, 501(C)3 qualified CalFire sponsor. OVA will have approximately two years to complete the project and will utilize our PM to prioritize projects. The funds are designated for Fire Prevention and not for replacing plants and trees, if removed.

OVA will be able to request up to 20% of the funds prior to September 2019. Other funds will be available through grant sources, such as CalFire, usually from September through November. We will not be notified in advance and usually have 60 days to submit grant requests.

Beginning in January 1, 2019, there will be $1,000,000,000 available to California residents over the next five years, with $200,000,000 available each year.

I want to thank our OVA Key Grant Team Members: Ron Manning; David Dearden; Ruthie Snyder; Jim Ouimette; Stephen Bishop; and, Christel Antone. We get to do this all over again for the next five years!!!
