All-American Dance Exported Around the World

This event has already happened.

Not only has square dancing changed a lot from the days of the early settlers in the American west, it has also gained a world-wide following since the 1950s. Modern square dancing is taught in around 30 countries. In addition to the USA, square dance classes and clubs can be found in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, China, Japan, and Russia. Within Europe, the majority of square dance clubs are in Germany and the UK. All teach the same Callerlab syllabus used by our caller, Lawrence Johnstone, though there are slight style and call title variations throughout the world. Thanks to this standardization, experienced dancers can dance internationally once they learn the calls.

So, dust off your dancing shoes and come join us in a uniquely American dance form enjoyed around the world. Since our reopening, our caller Lawrence Johnstone has been reviewing several moves each week, mixing them up in different patterns to various genres of music.

We meet Tuesdays from 7:00-9:00 PM upstairs at West Rec (with a new ion block air filtration system). Masks are now optional, but proof of vaccination is required at the time of your first visit. Donation of $6 goes to our caller. Come for the exercise – both physical and mental – and come for a chance to dance in a square and make a circle of friends.
