Unlike the traditional games of eight ball and straight pool that most people grew up with and predominately play today, 9 ball pool is a fast paced contest that is arguably more of a challenge, employing both the strategy and tactics reminiscent of a good chess match. On March 27, fourteen Club members took on that challenge at the 1st Annual Luther Lassiter 9 Ball Tournament that was held at the Club’s storied pool hall. With an added incentive of winning the 1st place prize “a 20 oz. bottle of Napa Smith Ale with a 9 ball bottle opener” the spirited double elimination event witnessed many dramatic twists and turns that were coupled with a good ration of fun and laughter. After two hours of competitive play and the chalk dust finally settled, Mel Ehlers edged out Mike “The Machinist” Nerat with a winning combination shot to the 9 ball that would have made Ol’ Luther proud. We invite all interested Oakmont residents to bask in this excitement and camaraderie and join our Club for future tournament play and socials events.
