Square dances begin with four couples in a square but are often cued by the caller to “circle to the left” or “circle right”. So, in more ways than one, we “dance in a square and make a circle of friends.”
The calls and practice patterns move on from basics like those and can eventually include hundreds of calls. The Oakmont Square Dancers stick to around 68 calls from the Mainstream Level.
Experienced dancers at Mainstream Level or beyond are welcome to come visit or join the Oakmont Squares at any time. A new session for beginners will be announced later in 2022. Beginners commit to regular attendance to learn the calls which are then combined into different patterns that are set to various genres of music.
The Oakmont Squares meet Tuesday evenings with caller Lawrence Johnstone, 7:00-9:00 PM at the East Rec Center. Donation is $6 per person. For information call Jenny at 707-367-2102.
