The Oakmont community supports a small but enthusiastic group of chess players. Those who are competitively minded compete in USCF (United States Chess Federation) sanctioned, nationally recognized tournaments. These latter tournaments are held at the CAC on Thursday afternoons from 2 – 6 PM. Prospective competitors are encouraged to visit and introduce themselves. Other spectators are welcome as long as they respect the need for quietude!
For those chess-players interested only in a recreational mental challenge, you are invited to participate in our “drop-in” chess games held also in the CAC, on Tuesday afternoon from 1 – 5 pm.
The chess club also mentors aspirant chess players of all ages, believing as we do that mental chess gymnastics keep the brain active and healthy into old age! We have one Oakmont resident who is 94 years young, who more than holds his own in the tournaments! We also have a competitive junior player, Vince Kriner (pictured below with Richard Duncan), who comes regularly to our Tuesday afternoon sessions, for fun and instruction.
Please come and expand your frontiers with the game of kings – Chess.
