Hang out with those who would inspire you in order to develop a lifestyle of positivity.

Copy the attitudes of those who have cheerful outlooks. No one exemplifies joy more than JoRene, Wednesday’s teacher. Humor, priorities, and perspectives seem to be her tools when confronting the negatives of life. Top on her priority list is physical exercise, even in semi-retirement.

While waiting for a new Monday and Friday instructor, many active Oakmont Health Initiative members keep muscles toned, joints flexible and weight down finding alternate ways of working out. Women and men who attend Wednesdays with JoRene classes typically include other forms of exercise during their week. If you’re having motivational slow-downs, look to these folks for inspiration.

In addition to Wednesdays with JoRene, Ilene and Kathy are avid (low handicaps, prize winning) golfers. (Kathy also plays a mean fiddle, learned after retiring.) Gary would decline being called a musician of any sort, or, for that matter, a prize winning golfer. However, he would claim regular workouts at the driving range. And, for more exercise, he walks to/from the club.

Rene, Nancy and John and Kathy swim laps. Linne never misses her Water Aerobics with Mary classes. She also hikes. So does Colleen. Additionally, Colleen now is so good at clog dancing, she got rave reviews for a recent performance. Many of the Wednesday exercisers line dance with Larry. Troy bikes and swims. Bocce Ball and Lawn Bowling include folks from OHI classes. Linda plays and wins at Pétanque. Other OHI exercisers are not only students of yoga, they lead sessions. Lastly, the gym at CAC is a huge draw for many OHI regulars. Give it a try and you’re bound to see someone you know.

Exercise is an equal opportunity option for life. For life! Whatever and wherever you find yourself, exercise is a choice. As you read this column, are you sitting with good posture? Are you using your core muscles to support your back? Will you have an outdoor activity today? No matter how short the time you exercise, you can be, indeed, an exerciser. Focus on the positive.
