It’s the new year and you know what that means. It’s tax time again! And once again the intrepid volunteers with the AARP TaxAide program will be available in Room G in the Berger Center to do certain taxes. We will begin on Monday, February 4th and will do taxes on Monday’s and Wednesdays from 9:00 until 3:00. Our season will end Wednesday, April 10th.

How Do I sign Up?

Stop by the Berger Center, room G between 9 and 3 any Monday or Wednesday from February 4th and sign up to get a time slot. Time slots are 9-10:30; 10:30- noon; and 1:00 -2:00. At that time you will receive an informational input sheet that you must fill out before your chosen time slot. There are no appointments over the phone. Because we need to give you the input sheet we require you (or a representative) to show up in person to get your time slot and input sheet.

What do you mean, “Certain Taxes”?

While we think our training is pretty awesome, you can imagine that with a tax code that fills hundreds of thousands of pages, our training time must be limited to taxes for the majority of our clients. This means that we can’t do Rental Income that includes depreciation for investment property or Self-employment that Exceeds $25,000. We also can’t do Net Investment Income (a special tax for high earners), Alternative Minimum Tax, Capital Gains on futures or options, Royalty Income with expenses or Foreign Financial Asset reporting. Because of these limitations, last year we turned away about 5% of the taxpayers who came to us for help. But unless your return falls into one of these special categories, we are fully trained and eager to do your taxes.
