The Oakmont Squares have enjoyed welcoming an influx of new dancers. Club caller Lawrence Johnstone has been using the “red light-green light” system, alternating dances for beginners with dance tips for the more experienced dancers so that everyone gets to dance at a comfortable level.

Square dance calls often prompt men to do certain moves while “ladies” do other moves. Callers create seemingly endless combinations of moves that make for interesting patterns. The club has some women who have learned to dance the men’s role in order to balance out the squares and give more people a chance to dance. A few club members can dance either role.

This year’s new class is now closed, but new classes begin periodically and will be announced in the future. Experienced dancers who may be thinking about joining the group are welcome to come dance at Mainstream Level. No partner is necessary since it is customary to switch partners often to get more dancers on the floor.
The Oakmont Squares meet Tuesday evenings from 7:00-9:00 PM at the East Rec Center. Donation is $6 per person. Come dance in a square and make a circle of friends. For information call Jenny at 707-367-2102.
