On July 4th, 1776, the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia to adopt the Declaration of Independence. The United States of America battled for sovereignty and claimed victory in 1783. In 1941, July 4th became a federal holiday. From that time on, speeches, military events, parades, and fireworks have marked the day.
Specific summertime activities come with Fourth of July hoop-la: pageants, picnics, baseball, watermelon-eating contests, and trips to the beach. Common foods include hot dogs, hamburgers, corn on the cob, coleslaw and apple pie. In Sonoma County, fireworks at the Fair Grounds or Green Music Center has become tradition.
