Our SIR 92 branch has monthly meetings on the second Tuesday on each month. We now meet by zoom and will as long as necessary. We are hopeful to start again meeting at the Berger in the near future. Our nest meeting will be on May 11th at 11:00 AM Fred Merrill once again did an outstanding job in getting a speaker that should be of interest to Oakmont members. Our speaker is Herb Behrstock talking about his experience with the United Nations. The title of his speech is:
“The US ‘back in’ the United Nations: Does it even matter?”
Below is a short BIO:
Herb had a 32-year career with the United Nations, with long assignments in 8 developing countries and UN Headquarters in New York. During that time, as a senior officer he managed teams about policy, planning, and administration of 100’s of development projects to meet priority needs of countries in China, South and East Asia, Africa, Haiti and Gaza.
He’s continued his interest and support of the United Nations and international collaboration, volunteering for 18 years as a leader of the United Nations Association. [The UNA is an international non-profit organization operating in 100 countries, with 200 chapters in the United States that raise awareness and support for the UN, and work through education and advocacy to strengthen US-UN relations.]
Herb is currently serving as President of the Northern California Division of UN. Herb was also a member of the UNA-USA’s National Council for 6 years and served as former president of the East Bay Chapter. Among his other interests is combating climate change and its impacts in the Bay Area and internationally.
Since retirement from the United Nations in 2002, Herb’s been a resident of Alameda with his wife Dorie.
