Our next meeting will be on May 3, 2:00 PM, in room B of the Central Activities Center. Member Jack Weeks will present music associated with three distinct phases of jazz development, including gypsy jazz, classic bebop, and soul jazz.

The Club is planning a real treat for our jazz fans in June. We are bringing two musicians widely known in both our country, and around the World. On June 14th, in Berger Center, Bobbe Norris and Larry Dunlap, the husband and wife team who have appeared in clubs, concert halls, and festivals throughout the US as well as Japan and Europe, will perform with Larry’s gifted group of musicians.

Bobbe was very active on the San Francisco jazz scene before moving to New York and gaining a reputation as a major star on the horizon. She recorded for Columbia records and appeared frequently on television and in major venues, before returning again to her beloved San Francisco, where she then met her future husband Larry Dunlap.

Larry has gained recognition through his work with Cleo Laine, Mark Murphy, Sheila Jordon and the Pointer Sisters. He is equally acknowledged as an arranger, as well as a pianist and is featured on many recordings by the above artists and many others. He has also been music consultant to Gordon Getty.

Bobbe and Larry have crafted a repertoire that uniquely combines Bobbe’s lush voice and jazz influenced musical story telling with Larry’s sensitive piano accompani-ments and creatively appropriate arrangements. Rex Reed has described Bobbe’s voice as “ a wide of range, yet intimate in style and delivery, with a low lush vibrato warmer than an open hearth on a winter night” (GQ). A review by Clive Davis in The Times (London) states, “Norris has no time for artifice. Her lush contralto is direct
and unfussy. She is a natural storyteller: as in the music of Chris Conner or Johnny Hartman. Every syllable of every lyric is made to count. Dunlap’s settings for piano and bass could hardly have been more sympathetic.”
