Karlene Navarro – Sonoma County Board of Supervisors

This activity/event has already happened.

Our chapter of SIRs is doing what we can to stay active in these trying times. A group gets together to play golf on Thursdays and we have informal chats. We have monthly meetings on the second Tuesday with topics set by our Big SIR and a guest speaker. Our speaker last month was Tom Kendrick. Tom gave an interesting and informative talk on the successes and failures of the management and construction of the Panama Canal.

Our next meeting is on Feb. 9, 2021. Our Speaker will be Karlene Navarro. Ms. Navarro was appointed by the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors to the position of Director of The Independent Office of Law Enforcement Review and Outreach (IOLERO) on March 12, 2019. From 2014-2018, she was in private practice as a criminal defense attorney maintaining a mixture of retained and court-appointed trial cases comprised mostly of serious and violent felonies and served as an appellate attorney. Ms. Navarro worked as a deputy public defender, taught legal research and performed writing and analysis at the University of San Francisco School of Law. As the director of IOLERO, Ms. Navarro reviews complaints against the Sheriff’s Office and makes policy and training recommendations based on those complaints. Since becoming the director of IOLERO, she has accomplished unprecedented changes at the Sheriff’s Office including increased training in implicit bias and crisis intervention, new policies that make arrestees and immigrants safer. Her Talk will discuss her duties.
