CURIOUS ABOUT LAWN BOWLING?

All Oakmonters are welcome to “drop-in” at the green for a quick look at the game on Saturday mornings from May 1 to September 30.

QUARTERLY MEETING

At the meeting on June 6th we heard reports of successful recruiting. The recent Demo Day brought in 11 sign-ups and 7 more were produced from the car show and Join-a-Club event. Now our job is to get them to take lessons and then actually come to the green and BOWL with us.

DEMO DAYS

Our next demonstration will be July 15th. Linda Rubio is in charge and will be looking for volunteers to greet, manage and demonstrate the game. If you are able to help let Linda know.

TOURNAMENTS

Open Pairs began Jun 13th with 24 bowlers. This is an elimination tourney so it will be awhile before it is completed. The brackets will be on the bulletin board where you can check on the progress of your favorite team.

Men’s Triples was delayed due to weather; it may be rescheduled; watch for notice of it on the bulletin board.

Upcoming tournaments:

Independence Day July 4th

Women’s Triples July 8th

Open Triples July 24th

WINE COUNTRY GAMES

This was the big tournament of the month. Twelve teams signed up; 6 from Oakmont and 6 from other communities in California: Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, Oakland, Fresno and Redwood City. Visiting teams have been consistently very strong; so it was this year.

The format followed ones used in the past. Three games, two in the morning and one in the afternoon were played by each team on Friday and Saturday. On Friday all 12 teams were matched by draw for the first game, after which teams switched to adjacent rinks and new opponents. On Sat-urday, the 6 teams with the most wins/points were matched against each other in the Gold/Silver medal group; the other 6 played for the Bronze.

By Friday evening the visitors dominated and 5 of them were in the gold silver bracket.

The Mission City Rollers from Santa Clara comprised of Gerald Tay-lor, Roseann Zimbauer and Dave Zimbauer dominated the field; it won all three matches and scored 34 points to take the gold medals.

The silver medals went to the Triple R team from Fresno made up of Rita Arriaga, Robb Pawlar and Rod Arriaga with 2 wins and 28 points.

The bronze medals went to Rolling Thunder, the powerful Oakmont team of Jim MacAlistaire, Jim Krause and Frank Gyorgy. They won all their games that day while scoring 35 points.

The Three’s Company team of Jerry Garland, Marilyn Garland and Topher Gayle also with 35 points but only two wins came in fourth.
