“On with the Show! The Rise of Broadway”
Helen Selenati
Mezzo Soprano Deborah Rosengaus will be entertaining Oakmont students this Fall with her engaging recount of the history of shows on Broadway. Rosengaus, whose former students sign up for her lectures, no matter the subject matter, is known as being very entertaining, with a large knowledge base, a great sense of humor and a gorgeous voice.
The lights of Broadway have always been bright, but before the neon and billboard of Time Square, were the candlelit salons of the New York elite and the gas lamps of Vaudeville. She’ll discuss the great producers and architects of the famous theaters as well as the artists that graced their stages. She’ll highlight performers that inspired the evolution of Broadway theatre including amazing clips dating back to the 1800’s.
Rosengaus, is a versatile entertainer who studied Opera, Theater, Music and Dance. From her beginnings as a young musician in the San Francisco Bay Area, she has toured internationally, with a variety of musical ensembles in concert halls in Tokyo, Beijing, Los Angeles, The Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. As a multi-disciplinary performer, she has given recitals in Mexico and across the United States, in many capacities as producer, director, performing on stage, designing sets and costumes.
She is widely known for her exciting, high-energy performances as a Mezzo Soprano creating memorable and endearing characters. She brings these skills to the classroom, to encourage a fun, light-hearted, and sometimes humorous atmosphere. Rosengaus will teach a 5-part series “On with the Show: The Rise of Broadway” beginning on September 16 and will present information about her class at the Class Preview on August 28.
