Oakmont Hosts CSA President and Shufflers

By Joan Kline

“Surprise, surprise, surprise, “ as Gomer Pyle used to say.

Did you know that shufflers in CA attend national and international shuffleboard tournaments? That was news to Oakmont shufflers.

On June 3, Jay Davidson, President of the CA Shuffleboard Association (CSA), his wife Marolyn and friends Gene and Shirley Eager met with several Oakmont shufflers to play on the new courts and shed light on the many opportunities open to players of the sport. The two couples live in Hemet, CA and Modesto respectively and stopped at Oakmont while traveling in the Bay Area.

Gene said, “We have so much fun shuffling and want to encourage you in any way we can.” The foursome recently competed in a National Team Tournament in Mesa, AZ and planned to compete in the National Senior Games in Albuquerque, NM. They attended an international tournament in Calgary Canada last July with competitors from Japan, Brazil, Germany and the UK. In two years, they hope to attend one in Australia. In October, they’re off to beautiful St. George, UT to compete in the Huntsman World Senior Games.

Jay said, “Shuffleboard can take you all over the world. In CA we have districts. There are clubs in each local district.” At this time, Oakmont is the only active club in Northern CA west of Sacramento.

Other interesting shuffle tidbits—CA actually has referees and scorekeepers for tournament play. In AZ, it’s up to the players to keep score. There are five-year age brackets for tournaments, starting at age 50 and ending at 100+. There is variation in the type of materials used to make courts. The ones coated with silicon beads and cornmeal are very slick, so the discs move slowly at a speed similar to stones used in curling.

The visitors gave a resounding thumbs up for the new Oakmont courts and the beautiful surrounding area.

SUMMER HOURS: Club play starts at 9:15 for instruction and doubles play from 9:30-11:00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This is a newly rebooted sport at Oakmont and the option for club play on days other than Tuesdays or Thursdays is still open—just let us know and we’ll make it happen.

The shuffleboard cues and discs are stored in the Shuffleboard Locker at the back of the Berger Center; they are available every day from 8:00 AM to 8:00

PM. Be sure to bring sunscreen and a hat.
