Wow! Pickleball has evolved into a new era with the USAPA Nationals held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden during the first week of November in the majestic Southern California Desert. 45 Pickleball courts were made available for 2300 player entries which included most of the best players in the world.
Oakmont was well represented with Tom Kendrick and his partner, Mike Petrillo, repeating as Gold Medal Winners in the 65-70, 4.0 level. It was an arduous match where it appeared that Tom was fading due to hyperthermal conditions; but with heart and desire, he was able to secure a win.
Some of the most entertaining matches involved our local Pickleball instructor, Adam Mac Kinnon, and his 14 year-old son, Theo. They entered in the 19+ year old, men’s doubles 4.0 level. I was afforded the opportunity to hear the conversations of their opponents prior to the match. Their conversations centered on their observation of that playing against the “skinny, 14 year-old kid”, would be a cakewalk. During the course of the matches, it soon became apparent that it was better to hit the ball to the highly accomplished father, rather than to the kid. By the end of the day, the “kid” (as described by his opponents) and the dad won Gold which added to the Gold that Adam won in the 19+ year old mixed doubles. They also went on to win Gold in the Parent/Child Doubles category.
The tournament was well attended by many Oakmonters who reveled at the quality of play. This event will surely elevate the sport to a new level of prestige and professionalism.
