Pickleball Round Robin Tournament

The Oakmont Pickleball Club held its Annual Round Robin Tournament on Saturday, April 27, 2019, at the East Rec Center. The event was organized by our own, Bill Wrightson, who received kudos from everyone for a fun and well organized event. In fact, one observer commented that he was seeing the best of Oakmont; where everyone mingled off court (many non-playing visitors came and watched the play), mixed it up during play and were having a wonderful time.

The games featured some very interesting team pairings. The Twisted Sisters (Pauly Uhr and Nancy Lande) teamed up and made quite a showing for themselves. It was obvious that the skills that they teach in Orientation were very useful in competitive play.

The “battle of the sexes” game was played by Connie Medeiros and Linda Schilling vs Noel Lyons and Phil Arnold in the final Intermediate Level game, with Connie and Linda winning. It was a disaster for the guys, best described by Noel who said, “we got paddled!” The Beginner Level finals was won by Stephanie Wrightson and Jim Ritter. It was Stephanie’s first competitive play and even though she had to be reminded of the rules, her tennis skills were easily transferred to pickleball.

The civil war game featured Tom Sheppard and Russ Elmer vs Mike Sheppard and Paul Yeager. The brothers have a long history of sibling rivalry, battling each other since childhood. The game ended 13 – 11, with Mike and Paul prevailing. Both brothers exerted maximum effort and passion.

Spouses also participated in the tournament, with some on the same team who had no comment after play. The ones on different teams were most expressive, such as Anita Easland and Diane Naylor. Anita lost a close one in the semi-finals where it was obvious that her lessons with Adam paid dividends. Diane Naylor and Shelia Ferguson played perhaps one of the most exciting games against Paul Yeager and Mike Sheppard in the semis. It was a nail biter all the way to the finish. The crowd was beside themselves with excitement during this game.

The advanced player finals featured Paul Yaeger and Mike Sheppard vs Lynn Yeager and Ray Wells. Yep, spouses playing against each other. It was a well-played game, 12-10, won by Paul and Mike (see attached picture). Paul was seen frequently complimenting his wife during play (assuming to remain on good terms) They even managed a hug after the game.

The day was best summarized by Michael Martin, “I came to Oakmont with a brain tumor and pickleball has revitalized me.”
