The Sunrise Movement and the Green New Deal
I’m totally excited that a local student with the Sunrise Movement is coming to the September Progressives meeting! Lucia Garay, a student at Casa Grande High in Petaluma will talk to us about the goals, planned actions, and her experience with the Sunrise Movement.
The Sunrise Movement vaulted to prominence when their sit-in at Nancy Pelosi’s office was joined by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The Sunrise Movement is one of many youth-led groups taking action to force governments around the world to take immediate actions on a huge scale to reverse the rising levels of greenhouse gases. Its leaders were instrumental in crafting the Green New Deal, which combines large-scale production of alternative energy with reduction of social injustices and inequalities.
Ms Garay will discuss the likely outcomes of continuing on our current climate path, citing scientific studies that document the dire consequence of even another decade of inaction Her message is that, although governments around the world are fiddling while the planet burns, the children hold out hope – children such as 16-year-old Greta Thunberg of Sweden, who has almost single handedly mobilized students across Europe to participate in weekly protests demanding immediate climate action.
This presentation points to the certainty that our children and grandchildren will bear the full consequences of current inaction. Ms. Garay and others are passionately working to engage adults to support the steps needed to avert tragedy on scale never experienced in mankind’s history.
Come to the East Rec Center on September 9 to hear from a young person on the front lines of the climate struggle and get inspired. Social time begins at 5:30 pm, meeting at 6:00 pm.
