OAKMONT’S NEWEST SPORT – TRY IT…..YOU’LL LIKE IT !
Despite the rainy weather, club members have been playing almost every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 to 11:30. Even on rainy days, we only need
a short dry spell, a quick sponge-off to remove the drops of water from the very top of the court and the shuffleboard discs are gliding down the court.
If you haven’t seen the new courts, find them right next to the Petanque court, between the back of the Berger Center and the OVA offices. Come and get quickly oriented to the safety and playing rules. You will be surprised how little effort it takes to push the discs down the 52 foot court, and how much fun it is to score points for your team while you knock your opponent’s discs off the scoring grid.
Shuffleboard is the only sport where either team can lose points by being knocked into the Minus 10 “kitchen” area at the back of the scoring grid. This dynamic scoring makes no lead safe in shuffleboard; one last disc aimed well can swing the score twenty to thirty points in a game played up to 75 points.
If you are not able to attend one of our regular Tuesday or Thursday morning sessions, please contact us and we will be glad to have a club member meet you at the courts at another time to teach you the basics. We will likely be expanding the club meeting days in the near future as more people start using the courts.
Remember that once you learn the court and scoring rules, feel free to practice or join friends anytime for a game of singles or doubles. The courts are open to all Oakmont residents and their guests, including minors who must be accompanied by a resident familiar with the court rules.
The shuffleboard cues and discs are stored in the Shuffleboard Locker at the back of the Berger Center; they are available every day from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Be sure to bring sunscreen and a hat. We are working with OVA maintenance to provide seating and shade once the rainy season has passed.
