After granting club recognition for Shuffleboard in December, the OVA Board in January authorized the purchase of two full-size Shuffleboard Poly Courts installed on top of the old concrete courts located near the OVA offices. These courts arrived in February, and on March 11 several of the 45 shuffleboard club members assembled them. The maintenance-free courts are made up of all-weather heavy plastic tiles and will stay in place for year-round play.
The club wasted no time and held our first on-court orientation and practice sessions from 10:00 to 11:30 on Tuesday and Thursday, our regular meeting days and time. More than 20 people attended the first two sessions and enjoyed relearning a sport that so many of us played as kids or adults on vacation or at camp. Future club activities such as tournaments and potluck socials are in the planning stage.
We encourage all Oakmont residents to try out our newest court sport that has a long tradition dating back to 1966. Come to the courts and get oriented to this low impact, high scoring sport, where finesse, aim and strategy win the day. Once you learn the court and scoring rules, feel free to practice or join friends anytime for a game of singles or doubles. The courts are open to all Oakmont residents and their guests, including minors who must be accompanied by a resident familiar with the court rules.
The shuffleboard cues and discs are stored in the Shuffleboard Locker at the back of the Berger Center; they are available every day from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Be sure to bring sunscreen and a hat.
