Preparing For The Big EQ
Janiele Maffei, chief mitigation officer of the California Earthquake Authority with 35 years experience in the earthquake engineering industry, will speak on the subject “Preparing for the Big Earthquake” at the Sept. 20 luncheon of Sons in Retirement #53 at Oakmont’s Berger Center.
Maffei is responsible for planning and directing the statewide residential retrofit program; overseeing the development and promotion of educational programs stressing the importance of mitigation; collaborating with academic institutions and industries to promote and support mitigation research and activities, and other actions that promote seismic mitigation and support mitigation research and activities. She is executive director of the California Residential Mitigation Program.
Maffei’s experience includes the design of new building structures and seismic strengthening of existing structures. She participated in post-earthquake reconnaissance investigations following the Loma Prieta, Northridge and South Napa earthquakes. She is a member of the Structural Engineers Association of California and served on their board from 1995-1997 and served on the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute’s board of directors from 2012-2017.
