The Vets Club last regular meeting was held at the end of September at the Berger Center. Over 45 attendee’s heard timely and interesting presentations from Kathy Vincent of the Veterans Administration, and Ashley Ward of Providence St. Joseph Hospices. Both presenters are Supervising Clinical Social Workers in their respective organizations.
Among other interesting facts, those in attendance learned that the Santa Rosa VA Outpatient Clinic serves over 7,500 local veterans. Although recent data shows that over 25,000 Sonoma County residents are veterans, the bulk of those served during the Vietnam era, followed by vets of the Gulf War.
We learned that in addition to the Outpatient Clinic near the airport, a new VA facility is currently being built in the S.W. area of Santa Rosa. Anticipating an opening next year in 2022, it will help better serve the needs of our population of eligible veterans.
Ms. Vincent spoke on the many services available through the VA. Her remarks covered eligibility, and services available for disabilities, and geriatric care. Additionally, Kathy also shared information regarding obtaining durable medical equipment and evaluating mobility and accessibility.
Currently working in Hospice, Ms. Ward previously worked for the VA Clinic here in Santa Rosa. She is passionate about working with veterans and is the coordinator for the We Honor Veterans program through Providence Health. Ashley’s comments covered information regarding services for those needing end of life care. She emphasized the importance and need for an Advanced Directive. She also shared a generic and legally accepted format for an Advanced Directive in the state of California.
