There have been recent questions about what the “Hope Of America” awards are, so here is my answer based on the recent presentations the Oakmont Kiwanis Club made to two fifth and two sixth grade Kenwood School students. The club makes these presentations at the end of each school year. The students are selected by their teachers as outstanding citizens, kind to others, helpful to all, eager to assist in any task, future leaders and excellent grade point averages (GPA). The four students Sara Asker, Robbie Eubank, Isabella Rodriquez and Finn White were well deserving of the “Hope Of America” awards. The Oakmont Kiwanis Club also presented the Distinguished Service Award to retiring superintendent/principal Bob Bales. In Oakmont and Kenwood the Kiwanis Club has close ties with the school and Kiwanian principal Bales.
Each year the club donates funds for the purchase of dictionaries for all 2nd graders. The dictionaries go with the students for use in future grades. The dictionaries are the students to keep. Club members also participate as reading buddies in classes. Kiwanis assists in the school’s collection of food for the Redwood Empire Food Bank Thanksgiving food drive. Club members support the Kenwood Education Fund and the 6th grade spaghetti feed to fund sixth grade students in their week of outdoor education.
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT ??? Besides Kenwood school your Oakmont Kiwanis supports projects at Luther Burbank Elementary School. Montgomery and Maria Carrillo High Schools.
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT ??? I was surprised to read in the July, 2021 issue of Oakmont Living” that after the concept of an Oakmont Veteran’s Day parade was hatched by Kiwanian Mel Ruiz (deceased), the Oakmont Kiwanis Club has sponsored and now co-sponsors the parade. Many Oakmont residents remember Mel and his volunteering to make Oakmont a better community with interesting activities for all. The Kiwanis Club misses Mel and Jay Cobb who was mentioned in the article. We need you to replace them and help us with the many service projects mentioned here and others not mentioned. Contact Fran Lazzarini, email: FML143@aol.com or phone 707-521-9024. Join us for one of our delicious scrambled eggs with fixings at 8am the Berger Center, August 5th at Oakmont Gardens.
