The Oakmont Democratic Club (ODC) is encouraging all Oakmonters to vote in the current special election. This election will have a major impact on both our State and Nation. The principle Republican candidates are each committed to take California in a vastly different direction. Registered voters should have received mail in ballots and the ODC encourages voters to just vote No on the Recall of Gavin Newsom and No on the Recall of District Attorney Jill Ravitch. Early voting is helpful in defeating the Recall and mail in votes must be postmarked on or before election day September 14th. If voters wish to vote in person, they should have received a card with their polling place. You can also vote in person early at the Registrar of Voters office. If you have questions, please call that office at 707.565.6800. They are very helpful.
The Republican candidate currently leading the polls is talk radio’s Larry Elder. Among some of his more interesting opinions are opposition to a minimum wage. The Sacramento Bee (8.15.21) quoted him in a recent interview saying, “the ideal minimum wage is $0.00”. In his book, The Ten Things, published in 2000, Elder also favors eliminating both the IRS and corporate taxes. He is against Roe vs. Wade calling it “one of the worst decisions the Supreme Court ever handed down (Mercury News 8.3.21)”. Elder believes Climate Change is not a “big peril” to planet Earth (LA Times 8.10.21). And yes, he often speaks in praise of former President Trump.
Republicans hope that in a special election they can pull a major upset by energizing their base, while most voters are not paying close attention and not voting. While Newsom has made some mistakes as Governor, we are leading most states in both defeating the pandemic and in our economic recovery.
As former Georgia State Representative Stacey Abrams puts it: “Governor Newsom has courageously led California through a global pandemic — putting health, science, and equity at the center of the state’s response. Republicans fought him every step of the way. Now, they are trying to overturn his election.” Or, as Senator Bernie Sanders says: “Right-wing Republicans in CA are trying to recall Gavin Newsom for the crime of telling people to wear masks and for listening to scientists during COVID.”
The Ravitch recall was set in motion by Bill Gallaher, known for the proposed Elnoka development next door to Oakmont. Ravitch sued him resulting in a $500,000 penalty. According to the Press Democrat- Gallagher spent over $750,000 to collect signatures for her recall.
The next ODC gathering will be Thursday, September 23 (6:30 PM Social and 7:00 PM General Meeting) at the East Rec. All Oakmonters are welcome.
