Star Power

We are the world,
We are the children,
We are the ones who make a brighter day . . .

Remember that song? It was written by Michael Jackson & Lionel Richie back in 1985. The world came together as one and raised over $100 million to alleviate poverty in Africa and the United States. They re-released the song and did it again after the 7.0 earthquake in Haiti. This is an example of what people can do when they come together in a concerted effort to aid a cause. This is exactly what Rotary does around the world.

Every Rotary Club in the world is part of the Rotary International Foundation which is funded by individual donations and has a 4 star ranking with Charity Navigator. The abbreviated mission of the Rotary Foundation is “Doing Good in the World”.

The Rotary Foundation has several areas of focus and they are:

·Peace, and conflict prevention
·Disease prevention
·Maternal & child health
·Basic education & literacy
·Economic & community development

And, now a 7th area of focus:

Environmental issues have jumped out at us quite vividly most recently with its many signs of impending disaster, i.e., polar ice caps rapidly melting, extraordinarily erratic wild fires & hurricanes, unusual weather patterns, etc. If you want to know the urgency of these signs, just ask most junior and senior high school students.

Maybe our age has made us somewhat indifferent or apathetic to what the future might bring for our divine Earth, but the generations coming up behind us are worried, as they should be. Look what a mess our generation and the generations before us have made in our quest for automation and instant gratification, etc.

Here in Oakmont the Valley of the Moon Rotary has partnered with other Rotary clubs and has long been involved in projects related to the environment, such as clean water in 3rd world countries, planting trees in fire-devastated areas, and more.

It seems now that our efforts have come to a grinding halt with COVID taking over and hindering our efforts to host fund raisers, which are what enables our club to contribute to projects both here in Oakmont and throughout the world. So, until things stabilize, we will continue to donate what we can to our local food bank, diaper bank, women & children in need, etc., but we really want to be able to do more.

The upcoming Rotary year (which begins July 1, 2022), will be where the brakes are applied, as our fund raising project coming up in February 2022 has been cancelled. We are looking for other ways to raise funds but we will be depending on charitable contributions from past supporters along with our own members. We can do this, I have no doubt.

Donations to Rotary Club of Valley of the Moon Foundation are tax deductible and can be mailed or dropped off c/o McBride Realty, 6520 Oakmont Dr., Santa Rosa, CA 95409. Thank you in advance.
