The Oakmont Community Garden at Stonebridge (OCG) held it’s annual membership meeting and elections on Jan. 19, 2019 at the Berger Center with good attendance.

Here is the newly elected Garden Board:  Pat Olive, President; Terri Somers, Treasurer; Shirley Phillips, Secretary; Sue Aiken, Head Gardener; and Elihu Smith, Board Member.
In a special garden board meeting, Elaine Rivas was appointed by the Board to fill a vacant board position.
A thank you to Gail Capehart, Head Gardener (during 2018) and Giselle Mottiez, Treasurer for the past few years, for their service to the garden–as they both stepped down from the garden board.  The Board also thanked Dennis Hall who assists with garden orientation
and Leyla Carreon who helps manage electronic documents.

Highlights of 2018 included: In the new garden extension, rows four and five are nearly filled, with spaces in row six marked and staked out.  Black plastic was laid as a temporary means to stop weed growth in the new extension.  Garden Board members were active in discussions about the dog park proposed adjacent to the garden; the dog park was ultimately approved on the far west side of the garden. Gardeners were reminded, as always, to wood chip their pathways, remove spent garden debris, and help check for weeds.

Gail Capehart gave an informative presentation about voles (a type of field mouse) and their life cycles.  The garden hopes to establish a more detailed procedure to deal with some of these offending critters.
Ideas for new committees were presented–to include garden publicity; vole patrols; weed whacking; assistance at social gatherings; and the creation and maintenance of a small flower bed within the garden.  A thank you was extended to all the gardeners who assist whenever they see something broken or out of place in the garden.
