Women Composers: A Lecture with Live Music

This event has already happened.

Presenters: Dr. Amy C. Beal and Larry Polansky

UC Santa Cruz music professor Amy Beal returns to the Oakmont Music Lovers series with an introduction to her recent biographical research on composers Carla Bley, Johanna Magdalena Beyer, and Lucia Dlugoszewski, alongside other notable 20th/21st century composers, including the art music composer Amy Beach, ragtime composers May Aufderheide, Julie Niebergall, and Elena Kats-Chernin, and the Bay Area political songwriter Malvina Reynolds (“Little Boxes”). Accompanied by mandolinist/guitarist Larry Polansky (Dartmouth College/UCSC Professor Emeritus), the presentation will be enhanced by live performances. The duo will end the morning with performances of Ruth Crawford Seeger’s arrangements of “American Folk Songs for Christmas,” published in 1953.
