Perhaps you have a neighbor who has a new bruise and says he has recently taken another fall. Maybe you have a friend who makes lunch dates, then doesn’t show up, but when she does, she repeats stories told just minutes before. Maybe you have a relative whose medications are a jumble, and you wonder if they are even being taken. In these situations, a geriatric case manager can offer guidance.
Also known as senior care managers, geriatric case managers will visit the senior at home to assess diet, safety, medication compliance and other important domains including the possible need for hiring help or placement. Often working with adult children or other concerned people, the geriatric case manager will discuss recommendations and then make a plan of action with an eye on quality of life.
Café Mortel is pleased to host geriatric care manager Kate Bond at our December 10th meeting. Kate will address emotional and physical aspects of healthy aging, future health care planning, options for care as we age, types of facilities, who pays for care and living options, and financial elder abuse.
With degrees in nursing and gerontology, 15 years in critical care and 17 years in geriatric case management in San Mateo County hospitals, including six years on an ethics committee at Kaiser, Kate has a deep wellspring of experience. After retiring (and lucky for us!), Kate moved to Oakmont where she began her own geriatric case management business.
Come to Café Mortel on Wednesday, 12/10, from 3:00 till 4:15 in the East Rec to learn what geriatric case managers do to give guidance to seniors at home with a goal of improving quality of life. This meeting will be in person only (no Zoom). It will be recorded and posted later on the OVA website.
