Firewise Actions

The Oakmont Village Association Board of Directors created a Firewise Task Force “dedicated to providing educational resources to assist Oakmont residents in reducing the risks of loss of life and property due to wildfires.” The Task Force has since been instrumental to helping Oakmont Village earn and maintain its recognition as a Firewise USA community.

By taking the actions recommended here, you can help reduce the risks to loss of your life and your property during a wildfire.

Reduce Risks to Loss of Life

Sonoma County has assembled a comprehensive set of resources to help residents get ready for any emergency, including wildfires. On the County of Sonoma Emergency Readiness, Response and Recovery website you can:

  • Sign up for local alerts and notices
  • Find your assigned evacuation zone
  • Get help preparing an evacuation plan, complete with a “Go Bag” of necessities
  • Access other useful resources, including a comprehensive Personal Emergency Plan document

The Watch Duty smartphone app can serve as an early warning system with regular updates about wildfires nearby.

Additional information is available from Meet Your Neighbors, Oakmont’s community emergency preparedness initiative.

Reduce Risks to Losing Your Home

Creating defensible space and hardening your home in various ways combine to reduce the risks of losing your home in a wildfire. These scientifically proven actions help protect your home from the flying embers that normally cause the first home in a neighborhood to catch fire, enabling the fire to then spread structure-to-structure.

A good first step to reducing the risks of losing your home is to request a free Firewise Educational Assessment. You can also request an assessment by sending an email with your name, address and phone number to firewise@oakmontvillage.com or by calling the OVA Office at 707-539-0701. You can preview what is involved in an assessment by downloading the Firewise Assessment Packet.

Guidance about defensible space and home hardening is available from California’s Safer from Wildfires program, which is part of the state’s Sustainable Insurance Strategy created to help residents obtain affordable homeowners insurance.

Because regulations and recommendations for defensible space and home hardening can change, please plan to revisit this Firewise Actions page periodically for potential updates.
