Caring for or visiting a seriously ill family member or friend at home can be a deeply emotional and challenging experience. It requires compassion, patience, and resilience. By being prepared and informed, you can provide meaningful support and comfort during this challenging time.

Café Mortel is pleased to bring an outstanding speaker to address this topic to our November meeting. Jim Monahan, M.Ed., has over 30 years of hospice and palliative care experience, including executive leadership, bereavement support, patient care, and volunteering. He has served as President of the Texas & New Mexico Hospice Organization. Currently, he chairs the Association for Death Education and Counseling’s Conference Planning Committee. His current work with the Mayo Clinic includes working with a Mayo researcher on a protocol to support grieving caregivers. Jim has been a National Trainer for AARP and a Regional Trainer for the American Cancer Society teaching bereavement support. He has published works on grief and loss related to AIDS, widows’ grief, and parental grief in various journals and books.

This presentation aims to provide guidance, practical tips and ideas for emotional support to ensure that you can offer the best care and companionship possible during such critical times. We will discuss how to prepare for a visit with a friend or neighbor who is seriously ill. We will also discuss active listening techniques for being present while listening to concerns and feelings and ways to uplift their spirits and create a more positive environment.

Join us on Zoom on Wednesday, November 13 at 3:00 until 4:15. Please note – This meeting will take place on Zoom only. We will not meet in person. All are welcome!
