Remember to Drive 25

A message from OVA Staff

If you’ve lived in Oakmont for a while, you already know the speed limit in this community is no faster than 25 mph. But it’s worth a friendly reminder, especially for newer neighbors, guests, and service people who might not realize why it matters so much to slow down when driving our streets.

One reason for this speed limit is to allow golf carts to share the road. But it only works if everyone drives at a speed where cart drivers are safe. Drivers who ignore the speed limit risk endangering cart drivers, and repeated offenses could prompt the City to change the speed limit to a mph that prevents residents from traveling through the community on a golf cart.

Our community also has an abundance of wildlife. Deer, rabbits, quail, and even a few skunks call Oakmont home right alongside us, and they could cross the road unexpectedly. Slowing down gives our wildlife neighbors an extra second or two to cross safely.

And as an active community, we also can’t forget to slow down for the cyclists who also share our roads.

It’s likely the transition from Highway 12 can feel a bit jarring to drivers. Coming off a 50-mph highway to a 25-mph road can feel slow. That’s exactly why it’s worth being intentional about easing off the gas as soon as you turn into Oakmont. What feels slow after a highway drive is exactly the speed that keeps our streets safe.

It’s not just residents who need to slow down, but guests and service providers, too. If you’re inviting someone into the community, such as a contractor, a delivery driver, or a friend visiting for the first time, please extend a reminder about the 25-mph speed limit and why it’s in place. Most people are happy to slow down once they understand the reasons behind it.

Oakmont is a wonderful place to walk, ride, and enjoy our beautiful community. Thank you for doing your part to keep our roads safe.
